Iraq Vote

A high price has been paid to make the Iraq elections possible. As a freedom loving person, I wish the best for the people of Iraq, and pray for their safety. To the extent the new government can serve its citizens and share the oil wealth equally among all, I will consider it a success.

Well said. I wouldn't get over ambitious though. As far as I know, these elections are precursors to next year when full parlimentary type elections will take place. The soon to be elected body will have the power to change the president and prime minister, though.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Half the country is boycotting the elections and the other half are afraid to vote, so it's hardly going to represent "the will of the people."

Did you see the arab cartoons I posted on my blog about it?

I think "half" is rather overstated and does no justice to the Iraqi people. Just watch the news...

It’s Sunday evening, Jan. 30, and it looks like the turnout was high in Kurdistan and Shiistan but not Sunistan. I wish to underscore that serving the citizens is a big “if”, and sharing the oil wealth, as Bush stated before the war, is an even bigger “if”. If it ever happens in any substantial way, I’ll be shocked, because I believe we’re there to seize the oil and save our own economy.

Sheryl I saw the cartoons, very funny, and I also saw the business cards, thanks.

SO where is the proof for this oil seizure nonsense? I think we have a bigger purpose to serve there.

Hi Tom,

I thought the cartoons were too true to be funny. The one where the opening to the ballot box was too small for the ballot reminded me of Ohio.

It doesn't matter if you have the right to vote if the means and/or process are set up to make it impossible it to exercise that right. *Sigh*

My dad asked me the other day how you could rig an election with a war. It had not occurred to him that just by deploying more troops in certain areas and destabilizing a particular region that you could affect the turnout of certain constituencies.

Like all the warnings about potential terrorism prior to our election. Some were targeted directly at minority communities.
