Is Islam working out?

Let us keep learning about Islam. The five pillars sound alright: monotheism, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage. If people believe in peace, love, truth, what Jesus stood for, then I think we can work with them in the American tradition of freedom of religion.

However, some of the manifestations are terrifying. Polygamy, pedophilia, gang rape, honor killings, stoning, and amputation are some of the horrors of Sharia law. And the subjugation of females really does occur.

Even if Mohammed did not have a child bride, Muslim scholars believed that he did, and there is a history of child marriage in Islam.

And then there's the doctrine of taqiyya, which apparently says it's OK to lie about the faith. And parts of the Quran which apparently encourage Muslims to infiltrate and then overthrow Christianity and other faiths.

Maybe we need our own freedom of religion doctrine, which states that if a religion doesn't believe in freedom of religion, then it doesn't get freedom of religion.

Now, parts of the Quran are more tolerant than others. There were a lot of changes after Mohammed moved from Mecca to Medina. If somebody quotes from the Mecca portion, we need to remind them of the Medina portion.

Is Islam working out? Based on what I have learned so far, I would personally breathe easier if it did not exist. But there are 2 billion of them, 3.5 million in the United States, about 1%. Right now I feel like Islam demands a balanced approach. Freedom of religion, but with eternal vigilance.
